CHUN-CHIEH YEN

Chun-Chieh Yen
To witness Chun-Chieh Yen at the piano is to encounter an artist who transcends mere virtuosity—an alchemist of sound, a storyteller, and an interpreter with flair and imagination, whose performances ignite the concert hall. Hailed as one of the most distinctive pianists of his generation, Yen’s artistry bridges continents and cultures, captivating audiences across Europe, America, and Asia with a rare combination of poetic sensitivity and daring innovation.
From acclaimed appearances with the Russian National Orchestra, Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, the Taiwan Philharmonic (NSO), and the National Orchestras of Peru and Panama, to close artistic collaborations with conductors such as Mikhail Pletnev, Jun Märkl, Henry Mazer, Shao-Chia Lü, and Günther Herbig, Yen’s career is a tapestry of partnerships at the highest artistic level. His performances have taken him to leading venues including New York’s Lincoln Center, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, and Paris’s Salle Cortot. Yet it is his restless curiosity and inventive spirit that truly set him apart. Yen’s recital evenings are immersive journeys—he has undertaken the towering challenge of performing all 27 Chopin Études in a single sitting, redefining the limits of both technique and artistic endurance.
A champion of new music and cross-genre creativity, Yen gave the Taiwanese premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and made the world-premiere recording of Qigang Chen’s Piano Concerto Er Huang for Naxos, a release that has since been regarded as a definitive reference. His adventurous spirit extends well beyond the traditional recital format: in a bold partnership with iconic actress and filmmaker Ai-Chia Sylvia Chang, Yen wove together poetry, film, and music in large-scale multimedia performances, drawing tens of thousands of listeners at the Shanghai World Expo and opening new narrative possibilities for contemporary piano performance. In his celebrated One Day Piano Festival x 3, Yen created three entirely distinct recital experiences within a single day, each shaped around a different thematic vision—an achievement of endurance, imagination, and curatorial depth.
Yen’s artistic foundation rests on a rigorous and international musical education. He began his training with Mei-Fu Chen and Rolf-Peter Wille, before continuing his studies at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover under the legendary pianist Vladimir Krainev. He later pursued advanced studies at the Colburn School in the United States with John Perry, further refining a musical voice that balances discipline with freedom.
Alongside his performing career, Chun-Chieh Yen is a highly respected educator and artistic leader. He is Professor of Piano at National Taiwan Normal University and the founder of the International Maestro Piano Festival & Competition. Frequently invited to serve on juries of major international piano competitions across Europe, Yen has played an active role in shaping the next generation of pianists, many of whom have emerged as prize-winners on the international stage. Restlessly creative, uncompromisingly original, and unafraid to blur the boundaries between art forms, Chun-Chieh Yen continues to shape a singular artistic path—one that surprises, challenges, and inspires, affirming him as a true poet of the piano for our time.
