PAUL-ANDRÉ BEMPÉCHAT
Paul-André Bempéchat’s motto:
“What could be more challenging or fulfilling than to faithfully explore the mind, the heart and the soul behind the music? It is an endless process which can only bring peace to the spirit and peace to the world.”
Franco-Canadian pianist Paul-André Bempéchat has won renown as an authentic interpreter of the First Viennese School, notably for his renditions of Schubert. Based at Harvard since 2002, M. Bempéchat has performed on both sides of the Atlantic, notably at Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the Wiener Festwochen, Vienna’s Musikverein, Stockholms Konserthus, Finlandiatalo in Helsinki, Boston’s Jordan Hall, London’s Barbican Center, and at the Holland Festival. He was Artist-in-Residence at Leverett House (Harvard) from 2016-2020 and regularly fulfills guest-residencies, most recently at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario and Longwood University, Virginia (2023).
Also trained as a social historian of music, Dr. Bempéchat is the first biographer of the eclectic Breton impressionist Jean Cras (2nd edition, Peter Lang Publishing, Switzerland). For this major contribution, France’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs knighted him as Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2017; later that year he also became Hederskapellist (Honorary Fellow) at Uppsala University. A committed “public musicologist”, Dr. Bempéchat has, since 2014, been a Lecturer in the Humanities at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Beginning in 2024, M. Bempéchat shall begin recording Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas for Danacord Records, Copenhagen.
